Biodiversity & sustainability

Biodiversity is THE most important sustainability topic.

Whether climate change, resource availability or social justice – biodiversity plays a key role in addressing the challenges of today and tomorrow.

For businesses, biodiversity is relevant in the context of double materiality: the question of how your organisation depends on biodiversity and how your organisation impacts biodiversity.

A robust and comprehensive sustainability strategy must therefore include measures for the protection, conservation and restoration of biodiversity and ecosystem services.

Our work is informed, among others, by the following agreements, initiatives and standards: the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, the EU Green Deal, the Science Based Targets Network (SBTN), the Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD), as well as reporting standards including Global Reporting Initiative (GRI), European Sustainability Reporting Standards (ESRS), Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) and the Deutscher Nachhaltigkeitskodex (DNK).

Why biodiversity?

Icon Wirtschaft

Biodiversity is the largest economic sector in the world and our best service provider. All services provided by nature are essential for us, usually irreplaceable and completely free of charge.

Icon Biodiversität

Biodiversity is under threat worldwide. As a result, nature’s ability to provide the ecosystem services we rely on to keep our economic and social systems functioning is diminishing.

Icon Klima

All climate goals can only be achieved with nature-based solutions. Many crises can only be overcome with the help of nature. Investing in biodiversity is the best way to secure the future.

Facts

The value of biodiversity and ecosystem services exceeds global gross domestic product by a factor of around two. Every year, everywhere in the world.

At the same time, around 60% of global gross domestic product depends directly or indirectly on nature's services. Protecting biodiversity is therefore a shared responsibility across politics, the private sector and civil society alike.

Over the past 50 years, we have lost 69% of all vertebrate species and 80% of all insects. The rate of species extinction has accelerated by a factor of 1,000. Today, only 2–3% of our planet remains true wilderness.

There are five main drivers of biodiversity loss: land-use change, overexploitation, climate change, pollution, and invasive species.

Because nature is not a negotiating partner that can be persuaded by our wishes or needs, we must act in its best interest. This has nothing to do with romanticising nature or idealised love of wildlife – it is about safeguarding the foundations of our lives and our economies.

Why is biodiversity important for your company?

01

Companies are fundamentally dependent on biodiversity

Biodiversity is the basis for providing ecosystem services. Whether it's the availability of raw materials, securing infrastructures or maintaining the health of employees — intact ecosystems are a prerequisite.

02

From negative to positive impact on biodiversity

All organisations influence the drivers of biodiversity loss.
The right business decisions can reduce negative impacts – or even reverse them.
We help you move from good intentions to meaningful impact.

03

Biodiversity is important for society and customers

More and more people understand the particular importance of biodiversity. Responsible companies meet the resulting requirements. This is about more than reputation.

04

Legislative requirements regarding biodiversity are increasing

Nations have set themselves goals to protect biodiversity and will break them down to economic actors in the form of guidelines and reporting. The externalization of environmental and social costs is becoming less and less possible.

05

Employees reward commitment to biodiversity

Young people in particular are looking for employers whose work is compatible with a sustainable society. Protecting climate and biodiversity is central to this. The more seriously a company addresses the topic, the more successful it will be in recruiting the best employees.

06

Biodiversity is a topic of the future

The future of our social and economic systems is also decided when it comes to dealing with biodiversity and ecosystem services.
While climate change is still the decisive “environmental issue” for many people, scientific findings have long since indicated that biodiversity
THE topic of the future is.
